Some time ago I posted about a beautiful book cover — Kierkegaard's The Seducer's Diary featured at Sutura. I really enjoy writing of this sort. He stood and produced with preternatural speed a series of original and difficult works, many of them written pseudonymously and published in editions that numbered in the hundreds — among them “Either-Or,” “Fear and Trembling,” “The Concept of Dread” and “Repetition. The year 1845 saw two more large-scale works: Stages on Life's Way, in which he once more went over the ground covered by Either/Or, this time making plain that religion forms a special sphere of existence; and Concluding Unscientific . Either/Or 1: Kierkegaard's Writings. Or is it that The Tiger Lillies' new album, Either Or, is titled after and inspired by Soren Kierkegaard's famous book of the same name? Yet even without saying it, I think you get the idea. Besten Kierkegaard's Writings, III, Part I: Either/Or. I find humor in those aspects of myself that can be reduced to clichés when I laugh at 'Stuff White People Like', but I also separate off another part, the part that does the laughing. I haven't read Kierkegaard and can't vouch for this particular book, but I have found these "Very Short Introduction" books useful when getting into a new area or author. (I think I've read the ones on Habermas and I took a course in Kierkegaard a few years ago and our readings were Fear and Trembling, Either/Or, Philosophical Fragments, and a few generous helpings from the Concluding Unscientific Postscript. Kierkegaard (yes, I have no idea how to pronounce his name, either) was apparently one of the founders of Existentialism.
